The wedding of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, took place at Westminster Abbey on Nov. 20, 1947. (At the time, Her Majesty was still known as the Princess of York.) Their first child, Prince Charles of Wales, came along less than a year later. He was followed by Princess Anne, Princess Royal, in 1950, Prince Andrew of York in 1960 and Prince Edward, Earl of Essex—now Duke of Edinburgh—in 1963. In addition, as of September 2022, the union of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philiphad resulted in a total of eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Now that’s a bigroyal family tree!
Queen Elizabeth’s grandchildren

Age: 44
Parents: Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips
Although King Charles was Queen Elizabeth’s eldest child, his younger sister, Princess Anne, was the first to marry, in 1973, and give the queen her first grandchild, Peter Phillips, born Nov. 15, 1977. Next up, read some more unknown facts about Princess Anne.
When he was born, Phillips was fifth in line to the throne and now stands at 17th—not that this makes much difference to Phillips, who appears to have embraced life as a commoner. That said, Phillips doesn’t always avoid the limelight. Recently, he was paid to appear in a milk ad for Chinese television. And back in 2008, he and his now-former wife, Autumn, sold the rights to their wedding photos to Hello! magazine for nearly $1 million.
2. Zara Phillips Tindall

Age: 41
Parents: Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips
Princess Anne’s second child, Zara, was born May 15, 1981, just two months before the iconic wedding of Prince Charles to Lady Diana Spencer. Zara shares with the queen a passion for horseback riding; a highly accomplished equestrian, Zara silver-medaled in the 2012 Olympics.
In 2011, Zara married a fellow athlete, rugby player Mike Tindall. Zara and Mike have three children, Mia, Lena and Lucas. Although Zara is only the queen’s second grandchild and was, at birth, number six in the order of succession, her place has now dropped to 20.
3. Prince William

Age: 40
Parents: King Charles III and Diana, Princess of Wales
Prince William was born on June 21, 1982, less than a year after his parents’ wedding. Because he was the son of the person next in line to the throne, William leapfrogged right over both of Princess Anne’s children in the order of succession to become second in line. He remained in that position until the queen’s death, when Charles became king and William became the heir apparent.
Prince William was known to have a loving bond with his grandmother. According to reports, the queen took the time to offer the future king a few practical lessons about how to be the British monarch. Prince William married Catherine Middleton, aka Princess Kate, in 2011. The couple has three children.
4. Prince Harry

Age: 38
Parents: King Charles III and Diana, Princess of Wales
The second son of Diana and Charles was born on Sept. 15, 1984. Prince Harry was the queen’s third grandson and fourth grandchild overall, and he always enjoyed a close relationship with his grandmother. However, that relationship appeared to have been fractured by the events surrounding Harry’s “stepping down” as a working member of the royal family in 2020.
Prince Harrywas named the Duke of Sussex when he married American actress Meghan Markle, now the Duchess of Sussex, in 2018. The Duke and Duchess, who are no longer styled as HRH, have two children, Archie and Lilibet.
5. Princess Beatrice

Age: 34
Parents: Prince Andrew and Sarah, Duchess of York
On July 23, 1986, the queen’s second son, Prince Andrew of York, married Lady Sarah Ferguson. Two years later, on Aug. 8, 1988, the queen’s second granddaughter, Princess Beatrice of York, was born. “Beatrice York,” as she is now known on LinkedIn, is said to have had a close relationship with her grandmother, the queen. Beatrice made the queen a great-grandmother for the ninth time when she and her husband, property developer Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi (whom she married in February 2020), welcomed their first child in 2021.
6. Princess Eugenie
Age: 32
Parents: Prince Andrew and Sarah, Duchess of York
On March 23, 1990, Andrew and Sarah welcomed the second York child, Princess Eugenie. Although Eugenie was reportedly the queen’s favorite granddaughter, she may have lost ground to her first cousin, Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor, the daughter of the queen’s fourth son, Prince Edward. In 2018, Eugenie married Jack Brooksbank, and the couple welcomed their first child in 2021.
7. Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor

Age: 18
Parents: Prince Edward and Countess Sophie of Wessex
Queen Elizabeth’s youngest child, Prince Edward, married Sophie Rhys-Jones in June 1999. At the time, Prince Edward was made an earl by the queen, and his wife was styled as a countess. Edward and Sophie’s first child, Louise, was born on Nov. 8, 2003.
Although all royal family members have the surname “Mountbatten-Windsor,” Louise was the first to actually use it. And although Louise has the hereditary right to use the title “HRH Princess,” Edward and Sophie decided to style their daughter as “Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor,” with an option to become HRH Princess at age 18. Although Lady Louise’s birthday has now passed, she has not yet exercised that option.
Lady Louise enjoyed a close relationship with the queen. Some say that she may have become her granny’s “favorite” after the two spent several weeks together at Balmoral during the summer of 2021.
8. James Mountbatten-Windsor, Viscount Severn

Age: 14
Parents: Prince Edward and Countess Sophie of Wessex
James Mountbatten-Windsor, born on Dec. 17, 2007, is the second child of Edward and Sophie and the eighth and youngest grandchild of Queen Elizabeth. Similar to Lady Louise, Viscount Severn has a hereditary right to the title of HRH Prince, but his parents have left it up to him to make that decision for himself once he reaches 18. Currently, James is 14 and stands 12th in line to the throne. He is known for his unparalleled grill stylings while summering at Balmoral.

Parents: Autumn and Peter Phillips
Queen Elizabeth’s first great-grandchild, Savannah Phillips, was born on Dec. 29, 2010. Like her father, Savannah received no titles or royal stylings at birth. She may have the unofficial title of “royal cutup,” however, having distinguished herself as such on the Buckingham Palace balcony during 2018’s Trooping the Colour celebration. Savannah also made a notable appearance as a bridesmaid in the wedding of her first cousin once removed, Princess Eugenie, later that same year.
10. Isla Phillips

Age: 10
Parents: Autumn and Peter Phillips
Born on March 29, 2012, Isla Phillips, the queen’s second great-grandchild, is the second daughter of the Elizabeth’s first grandson, Peter Phillips, and his former wife, Autumn. Like her sister Savannah, Isla has a way of attracting attention in the most adorable of ways during royal family photo opportunities. In addition, she’s been seen, from time to time, out and about doing the sort of things both her Aunt Zara and her great-grandmama, Elizabeth, enjoy, such as attending equestrian events.
11. Prince George

Age: 9
Parents: Prince William and Catherine Middleton
Prince William married his college girlfriend, Catherine Middleton, in April 2011, at which time the two were named the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge by the queen (now that William is the heir apparent, they are the Prince and Princess of Wales). Two years later, on July 22, 2013, their first child, Prince George, was born. Although George is not yet 10 and is the third great-grandchild of Queen Elizabeth, only one person stands between George and the throne: his dad.
12. Mia Tindall

Age: 8
Parents: Zara Phillips Tindall and Mike Tindall
Mia Tindall was born on Jan. 17, 2014, to Zara Phillips Tindall, the second child of Princess Anne, Princess Royal, who, herself, is the second child of Queen Elizabeth. The 8-year-old commoner stands at 21st in line to the throne, right after her mom, Zara. Like Zara, Mia enjoys equestrian events, especially with her cousin Savannah Phillips.
13. Princess Charlotte

Age: 7
Parents: Prince William and Catherine Middleton
Born May 2, 2015. Princess Charlotte is the fifth great-grandchild of Queen Elizabeth, as well as her fourth great-granddaughter. She is also the first female member of the royal family to have been born after the queen’s ratification of the Succession to the Crown Act. The Act ended the tradition of male primogeniture, by which the queen, herself, would have lost her place in the order of succession if her parents had produced a subsequent male heir.
Thanks to the Act, Charlotte did not lose her place in the order of succession when her baby brother, Prince Louis, was born. With her grandmother’s passing, she is now third in line to the throne.
14. Prince Louis

Age: 4
Parents: Prince William and Catherine Middleton
Prince Louis, born April 23, 2018, is the sixth great-grandchild of the queen, the second great-grandson and the fourth in line to the throne. His position stands to drop further when his older siblings, George and Charlotte, begin having children of their own.
15. Lena Tindall

Age: 4
Parents: Zara Phillips Tindall and Mike Tindall
On June 18, 2018, Zara Phillips Tindall gave birth to her second daughter, Lena, with her husband, Mike Tindall. Lena is Queen Elizabeth’s seventh great-grandchild and fifth great-granddaughter. Like Mia, Lena is a kid who likes doing kid kinds of things, and while she is very much a part of the royal family, she is from a branch that seems to have little interest in being crowned monarch.
16. Archie Mountbatten-Windsor

Age: 3
Parents: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle
Born May 6, 2019, Prince Harry’s first-born child, Archie, is the first great-grandchild of Queen Elizabeth to use the surname “Mountbatten-Windsor.” The son of a grandchild of the queen, Archie did not have the hereditary right to be styled as “HRH Prince” when he was born, as that right is exclusive to the sons of the British monarch’s male children. Now that the queen has passed and his grandfather, Charles, has become king, Archie is entitled to use the“HRH Prince” styling, though it remains to be seen if the family will actually use it. In addition, he is now eligible to inherit his father’s title as Duke of Sussex. Archie lives in the United States with his parents.
17. Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi
Age: 1
Parents: Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi
On Sept. 18, 2021, Princess Beatrice and her husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, welcomed their first child, Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi. Sienna has no royal title, but she stands at 10th in the line of succession.

Born on June 4, 2021, Lilibet (“Lili”) Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s second child, is named for her great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, whose childhood nickname had been Lilibet. She is also named after her grandmother, Diana Princess of Wales. Although “Lili” has no royal title, she stands seventh in line to the throne. Lilibet met Queen Elizabeth in June 2022, just a few months before the queen’s death.
